Lucie passed to the other side on January 21st, 2009, at the age of 79, at the Hovlid Skilled Nursing Facility at Biggs-Gridley Memorial Hospital, after a courageous fight with lung cancer.

Born October 27th, 1929 in a house in the 300 block of Nevada Street in Gridley, the eighth of 12 children, to Arthur and Tessie Giles Mitchell; Lucie attended Gridley Schools and graduated from Gridley High School in 1947.

In 1949, she met William M. “Frog” Stafford at a girl’s softball game in Vierra Park, and they were married in late summer. Lucie kept busy raising her six children. She was a rabid fisherman, and spent many hours at her favorite fishing holes on Butte Creek and the Feather River in her bright orange pickup truck. She was a talented artist, with several paintings which were displayed in businesses throughout the area. She had Christmas tree lots, and for years made Christmas wreathes and garlands for many prominent homes and businesses in Gridley. She enjoyed crafting, landscape photography and gardening. In later years, her interests turned to watching the Sacramento Kings and all of the golf she could find.

Lucie was preceded in death by her husband, Frog, and son, Russell. She is survived by children Wuzzy Stafford, Don (Robyn) Stafford, Shirley (Ed) Melton of Gridley, Fred (Jodi) Stafford of Yuba City, and Laurie Stafford of Oakland; a sister Vivian York, of Nicolaus; and, brother Keith Mitchell, of Arboga; 16 grand children and eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 1:00 pm in the Gridley-Biggs District Cemetery.
