In 2007, the Division I Pirates finished 20-8, with an 11-3 record in the Hayward Area League, in the North Coast Section. The team is returning all five of its starters from a year ago, and nine players in all.

San Leandro lost its only playoff game to Monte Vista High School.

Jared Cunningham led the team in scoring in 2007 with 17.8 points per game. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Demetrius Owens averaged 9.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Point guard Shaheed Young led the team with 5 assists per game, and averaged 9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

All three players are being recruited by Division I colleges, and Cunningham has an Arizona State University commitment. Pierre Davis and Jermaine Gaines are also being recruited.
In the last five years, San Leandro High School has had six players sign with Division I. The Pirates were ranked in the preseason top 20 in the state.

Outstanding former players include Kareem Nitoto (Hawaii), Phillip Thomas (University of Idaho), Chris Rush (Eastern Washington), Charles Jim-George (UC Riverside), Kerry Wooldridge (San Jose State) and Dennis Dixon (Oregon University), who is now a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

San Leandro also took 3rd place at the 2006 GIBT, and 2nd in 2005.
