The Biggs varsity girls basketball team hit the court on Saturday for their first scrimmage of the young season, which has a lot of people optimistic, including first year head coach Mike Pena.

Returning juniors from last year include Paloma Marquez, Jessica Rudd, Lindsay Speegle, Hailey Reeson, Zuleyma Tinoco, Steffi Davis and Emily Honan. Returning sophomores from last year's varsity team include Jordan McCartin and Holly Chandler, who won last year's MVP.

Coach Pena is very excited about the juniors from last year's junior varsity team, which includes Kayla Wheeler, Jackie Caro, and Neika Epple. There are a few players who are playing for the first time this year, Araceli Ramos and Aerial Proper, who just moved to Biggs. Chelsea Callaway and Olivia Johnson both played different sports last year.

So far the varsity girls have only had three practices, but their bench depth and their ability to work together has Pena and the girls excited about the year.

"Fresh players constantly being able to come off the bench, and work together is very key," Pena said. "In order to win we have to approach each day positive, and if every day we improve we will do just fine. We also need to approach each game defensively and offensively with a lot of poise."

So far Pena does not know of any weaknesses, but he does think that not knowing all of the girls' strengths or what combos work does hurt them a little bit. But in time that will all be established.

Pena focused all last week on getting his teams work and preparing them for their tough season ahead. So far there is not a projected lineup, due to only practicing three times.

"We will not really have a set lineup due to all of the different players we have," Pena said.
