Lucy Witherow is used to former students coming up to her and re-introducing themselves after working and on in the Gridley School District nearly 30 years.

This summer, a former student, Patricia  Zellner Massie, of Oak Hills, Ca., contacted Witherow after inquiries at the Butte County Archives about the Lone Tree School on Lone Tree Road, where Massie attended first grade in 21-year-old Lucy Witherow's class.  Witherow, and her husband Ken, had just been married.

The school was located near Massie's grandparents, Luther and Mary Zellner's ranch where she lived. Luther is buried at the Oroville Cemetery, after passing away when Massie was just six-years-old.

Massie has very fond memories of her time at that school and has wondered about this special teacher ever since.

The two ladies came to see me when they reconnected by Massie coming to Gridley. They even brought copies of the "Dick and Jane" books that Witherow used in her class.
Massie's parents were Paul and Ruth Zellner.

Witherow said she remembers that the kids dug a cave and she told them to get out. The school sat on two acres and Massie remembers that the classroom had a pot belly stove in the back of the room and a cloakroom with a tiny kitchen.

Massie loves anything historical and loves researching her past. She stated she and her husband Don came to the area on their honeymoon after visiting Carmel and found the ranch area where she had grown up, but not the school. The Massie's have been married 43 years.
Information on the Lone Tree School that Massie has collected includes, the established date of May 23, 1861 and the address listed as Honcut, formed Palermo Union July 1, 1952, with Palermo.

Massie's father and grandfather worked on the Oroville Dam.

Witherow stated there were 37 children in the classroom and she was there her second year of teaching from 1949 to 1951. The school had grades one through eight.

Witherow retired from the Gridley School District in 1984. Something tells me these two ladies will stay in touch.
